How to Select Your Final Year Project

Most college students in streams like engineering are required to do a final year projects for ece. Having spent most of your college life attending structured classes, a final year project may seem like a daunting task. Theory classes and labs usually have textbooks or manuals to guide us but a project is a completely different academic activity. Your first question when you have to start working will probably be- “What topic should I choose”? Here are a few tips on how to start with your final year project.
  1. Do some research

Start brainstorming for your project topic by reading up on current areas of research and development. You can gather a good amount of information by reading relevant books, articles by professionals and popular web resources. Your initial research will help you be aware of the different fields in which you can do your iot based projects.
  1. Identify areas of interest

Choose an area in which you are interested or in which you would enjoy doing a project. Consider whether you would be able to understand the concepts comfortably if you choose a field, or if you would be interested in a career in that field. You should be able to explain any concept related to your project’s field when presenting the same. It is important to select a field in which you have interest as this will help you generate quality work.
  1. Choose a topic that will add value

The topic or title you select must be one that adds to your knowledge or helps you enhance your skills. This way, your project will be a positive endeavour towards your growth in that field. It can also be a topic that may have practical applications and might be beneficial if implemented. This will open up opportunities for you to present a fully developed product to companies during interviews and you may very well be hired on the basis of your final year project.
  1. Take help from a mentor

Approach a faculty member to guide you with your project title. Choose a mentor such that their area of study coincides with your interests as this will maximize the input that they can give. Once you have decided on a topic and started working on it, ask your mentor to review your project regularly so that any suggestions or corrections can be incorporated immediately. Don’t shy away from asking for help as this will most probably be your first project. Having a mentor will help you ensure that you don’t make mistakes.
  1. Pick a good teammate

Most students prefer to do their final year project with a partner. Choose a partner that you are comfortable with or have had previous experience working with. It helps if both of you share similar interests in your courses. Make sure that your teammate is reliable and does not tend to unload all the work on you. A good study partner will help you brainstorm some great project ideas for cse and help you come out with a well-researched final year project.
